by Valeria Leon
Beyonce and Jay-Z are investing in the education of the next generation. The power couple announced late August that they'd be awarding 1 million dollars worth of scholarships to high school seniors.
The BeyGOOD initiative and Shawn Carter foundation have partnered with the Boys and Girls Club to award 11 lucky high school students each $100,000 to put towards their college career funds from the beginning to end of their enrollment. Students will be chosen by the Girls and Boys Club based on academic excellence and demonstration of financial need that would otherwise prevent them from pursuing a college education.
These students will be chosen from each of the 11 spots of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s On The Road II tour stop cities - Seattle, Santa Clara, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Houston, New Orleans, Arlington, Miami, Orlando and Atlanta. Recipients of the scholarship will find out during their cities On The Road II tour stop performance.
This isn't the first time Beyonce's shown her support for the next generation and their education. This is the third scholarship program that Beyonce has done two years in a row.
After dropping her album Lemonade Beyonce launched the Formation Scholars Award, awarding scholarships to four female college students. One at Spelman College, one at Howard University, which are both historically black universities (HBCUs), and two from Berklee College of Music and Parsons School of Art and Design. Each of these young women were awarded $25,000 each to use towards their college funds.
In April Beyonce announced that she would award $25,000 to four students, each attending one of four HBCUs like Texas Southern University, Morehouse College, Fisk University, and Grambling State University. Two weeks after the singer’s announcement, Google matched her donation. This expanded the scholarship to four more HBUs, awarding four more students with $25,000.
Jay-Z has also been known to help students afford college and give them tours of the nations HBCUs through the Shawn Carter Foundation.
It's amazing to see that the celebrities like Beyonce and Jay- Z giving back to their communities by investing in the next generation. Hopefully beyonce and Jay-Z’s positive actions will encourage other celebrities and people to help out the youth of our society by giving them a better chance of pursuing a college education.
