How Toxic is Social Media?
By Marina Rodriguez
Social media has been evolving since 2002, when the first social media platform, Friendster, was released. More and more apps have been created over the years that have become widely popular all over the world. Apps like Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Tik Tok are some of the most popular social media platforms in the world. All of these platforms are used to post for your friends and the world to see, as a way to express yourself and to communicate with your friends as well. But over the years, social media has taken a turn for the worse and become a very toxic community.
Cyberbullying and the infamous “cancel culture” has become a trend at this point on social media. Since the vast majority of the world uses social media, you don’t know what to expect from people on socials. Whether it be the nicest or rudest person you’ve ever met in the world, you just don’t know what to expect from people. It’s a good example of not judging a book by its cover. Some people love to find a reason to dislike a person or to hate on random people they don’t even know without any reason to do so.
Social media has caused a lot of trauma and self-esteem issues for many teens and preteens. Nowadays, social media makes it seem like you need to be pretty, and to have the perfect body to be able to get popularity. Many young girls look up to these female celebrities and wish to be and look exactly like them. They feel as if they are not good enough, and that their body isn’t skinny enough to impress everyone else. Boys also have a lot of influence on this because they praise these female celebrities and girls pressure themselves to impress the person they're interested in. It has been a trend on Tik Tok for girls to show the influencers who they are most insecure about, but this trend has also helped ladies come together and praise each other. Some new influencers on Tik Tok have also been starting to put themselves out there to show that everybody is beautiful in their own way, no matter what their body shape or size is. It is always good to be considerate of those you may come across on social media because you never know what someone may be going through.
Now don’t get me wrong, social media could be used in beneficial ways, but it all comes down to the money and popularity. People will do anything they can to get money and to be better than everyone else. Everybody wants to be on top. Social media has made a lot more people become self-centered, and it causes numerous people to lose friendships, sometimes even relationships with relatives. It’s best to always have a private account on social media platforms and to watch how much time you spend on social media as well. Take a long break from social media or even your phone every once in a while. It can be very mentally draining and be harming your mental health with all the time spent on apps. Make sure to take care of your mental health, and realize the truth about social media.
