Mark Marek and His Gore

(Trigger Warning)

By Yuliya Eruslanova

Mark Marek is a 41 year old man who created a site called “” This site was a popular trend a few months back, where people would go on to watch disturbing videos. This site is usually targeted towards the younger generation. As the name reads, it was a site full of gore- extremely graphic content, which included cruel ways of murder, self harming accidents, open surgeries and torture. This site was launched in April 2008 by a Candian-Slavak man Mark Marek. Marek was  arrested back in 2013 for posting a popular video which he named, “ 1 Lunatic, 1 Ice Pick.’’ The video showed the murder and dismemberment of a Chinese international student Jun Lin by Luka Magnotta. Magnotta was known for also being a “cat killer” because he fed cats to snakes and sucked them up like vacuums. Luka was sentenced to life in prison. Marek removed the video the day after it was published in the news media. Mark Marek even mentions that, “I believe it's important, the ‘1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick’ is seen and understood for what it is, so appropriate steps can be taken to bring those who are responsible for justice and prevent any further atrocity from happening.”

In July 2013 Merak was arrested in Alberta, Canada and was charged with corrupting public morals. After getting arrested Merak said, “It may sound strange but at this point in my life, jail doesn't sound all that unattractive.”According to Newsweek”, Marek wrote that he was totally fine with taking a break from the world and that he “dedicated his life to fight against evil and lies and I know that God and truth are on my side.” In January 2016, Mark pleaded guilty to the obscenity charges against him and was given six months of conditional sentencing. For three of those six months, he was under house arrest, while the remaining consisted of community service. According to CBC Mark Marek left the courtroom wearing duct tape over his mouth with black glasses holding a paper which read, “Guilty of Canadian Thought Crimes.” The website BestGore is currently shut down. The site now says, “Change is the only constant in life. Remember: Just when the caterpillar thought its world was over, it turned into a butterfly!” and a bunch of other information. The world these days is filled with so much Internet mysteries, some may take much longer to find and some just come right up. The amount of shock sites that are still up and running on the media is bizarre and unacceptable.
