Summer Getaways

by Lauren Trainor

With spring break over, everyone is anxiously awaiting the next time to leave school.  Sun is out and summer is on its way.  The best plan to relax and enjoy summer is to get away from home.   Laying down on the beach soaking in the heat or exploring Europe and its many attractions is a fabulous method to enjoy your summer vacation.  Maybe your version of an amazing summer is amusement park rides and carnival food. Whatever choice you make, these destinations are some of the most popular vacation spots.

Hawaii has eight islands, however, six are open to the public.  The three main islands are the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu.  I got the chance to go to Maui this past summer and experience the beautiful area for myself.  Walking on the beach, snorkeling with turtles, hiking up volcanoes, and hiking to waterfalls; Hawaii has something for everyone.  Visitors can even check out the black sand beaches!  The six hour flight is long, but it is worth the effort.  Bora Bora is also a beautiful calming environment.  It is a bit further away from the west coast of the United States compared to Hawaii, but the beaches and activities are just as enjoyable.  Tourists can stay in luxurious houses that stand with the ocean below and experience the relaxing spa resort.

Maybe beaches aren’t for you. Perhaps adventuring through Europe is more your taste.  The city of love and fashion is a must-stop destination.  Croissants and baguettes in Paris while checking out the Eiffel Tower sounds like a fantastic day.  The Louvre museum holds the Mona Lisa and less than an hour away is Disneyland Paris.  The ancient ruins in Rome radiate so much culture and influential art as well.  Italy’s pasta and pizza can be enjoyed while glancing at the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the Colosseum.  Old Renaissance history can be found in Florence, Italy which is where the statue of David, sculpted by Michelangelo from 1501 to 1504, proudly stands, along with the Florence Cathedral.

However, you don’t need to go out of the country to have fun!  A road trip with friends is an amazing experience as well.  If you drive north to Oregon, a treehouse resort awaits you.  Out’n’About Treehouse Treesort is a bed and breakfast filled with individual treehouses for the guests.  The houses come in different sizes and include full bathrooms and kitchenettes.  All houses have electricity and mini fridges to ensure that your visit is wonderful.  Visitors can use stairs, ladders, or swinging bridges to reach their house.  It is located next to the Siskiyou National Park near the California and Oregon border.  Surprisingly it is the same distance from Fremont to Disneyland!  Additional activities are available for an extra cost, like zip lining, horseback riding, and rafting.

Especially if you are part of the graduating class of 2016, this is your last summer before you are off to college.  An exciting summer is just what you need before you start your life as an adult.  This concludes your travel guide.  I hope you find a destination that is enjoyable.
